The Galaxy S series is referred to as the standard bearer for the Korean technology company’s line of smartphones. The following article seeks to compare the newest phone in this series, the Samsung Galaxy S Advance, with the as of yet unreleased Galaxy S III.
Dimensions and Form
The Galaxy S Advance shares an almost identical chassis to the original Galaxy S. The 9.7 thick frame is smooth and well proportioned and extremely lightweight at 120 grams. The Galaxy S III, meanwhile, is expected to be cosmetically intriguing, with Samsung being motivated to redo the design in the wake of the recent litigation with Apple. Rumors indicate the bezel will be narrowed down to provide a true edge to edge display. The Galaxy S III will likely be thinner than the Advance given the 7mm devices put out by their competitors.

The Samsung Galaxy S Advance utilizes the company’s Super AMOLED technology and is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass. The modest 800 x 480 resolution is fine for the diminutive 4 inch screen, and equates to a pixel density of 233 ppi when you do the math. The S III, on the other hand, may feature a 4.6 inch screen to justify an upgrade over the 4.2 inch screen offered on the S2. The real selling point will be the 720p display which will clock in at a stunning 319 ppi.

Storage and Memory
Storage on the Galaxy Advance S comes in two separate models of 8 and 16GB, with microSD card slots that store up to 32GB. The processor is supported by 768MB of RAM. The Galaxy S III is rumored to offer 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB products, seemingly to compete with the storage capacity of the latest iPhone. The addition of a microSD slot and potentially up to 2GB of RAM should make the device even more attractive to prospective buyers looking to use their phones for high quality video and software tools.

Processing Power
Processing power is where the Galaxy S Advance is a significant upgrade from the original Galaxy S. The additional core on the 1GHz Cortex A9 is a dramatic leap in architecture. The Galaxy S III may go even further with a quad core processor, but rumors have it that the device will likely feature a dual core A9 processor with a higher clock speed, in the neighborhood of 1.5GHz.

Operating System
The Galaxy S III is purported to run Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, an upgrade over the Gingerbread software currently running on the Galaxy S Advance. There are have been no press releases from Samsung regarding a software upgrade for the device. The new OS features a better browser with tabbed browsing and more intuitive navigation.

Camera
The rear camera on the Galaxy S III is reported to be an astonishing 12MP capable of capturing video at 1080p. The front-facing camera will probably be 2 megapixels, but the popularity of video calling may force Samsung to alter the specifications to meet this demand. The Galaxy S Advance has the same 5MP, 2592 x 1944 resolution camera as the Galaxy S, which is to say it’s not an advance.

At the pace technology moves, even the latest devices prove to be no competition for the next product being developed. The Galaxy S III represents more than just a marketing department’s fascination with roman numerals. It offers substantial gains from previous models in terms of processing power and resolution, at a time when mobile devices are being asked to do more.
