HostGator Review

hostgator Our HostGator Review of The Top Pick for 2011

HostGator one of the largest web hosts in the world. They host over two million domains and that number is constantly growing, so, they must be doing something right.  Rock bottom intro hosting packages and great support keep this web host humming.

They are a green web host, with all of their reseller and shared servers cooled by wind power — a lot of folks don’t know that.

HostGator offers web hosting for only $3.95/month if you use our exclusive “askweb” coupon code. Click below to visit HostGator.

The Bottom Line - HostGator is Cheap and Solidly Reliable

HostGator is one of the latest additions to our top 10 web hosting list. They are a well established hosting provider that offers an extremely reliable service. For only $3.95/Month (cheaper than bigger sites) you will get Unlimited Disk Space and Unlimited Bandwidth.

Unlimited Domains, FTP, Databases, MySQL - All the Features of This Large Hosting Company

One of the best things about HostGator is you get pretty much all the bells and whistles, even with a starter package.  In other words, even with their most affordable option, you still get all the features you could possibly want.

Now, if you want to ramp up your business in a hurry and build many sites and blogs, you will need to step it up to at least their Baby Plan to get unlimited domain hosting.  We know that there’s a lot of ambitious people out there who will follow through and build, 20, 50, or 100 domains out in a year.

Having unlimited databases is really nice because modern sophisticated web sites need good reliable databases, like the ones that you’ll find with Joomla or WordPress.  It’s these back end features that allow our sites to be interactive and truly valuable to our visitors on the net.  The days of ultra simple sites is over.

Unlimited Email Accounts

Having unlimited email accounts is nice if you’re building multiple businesses, you can assign everyone company email addresses through the host.  Their system is reliable and extremely easy to use.

hostGator Up Time Complaints

One of the main reasons that customers choose HostGator is because of their cheap web hosting packages and their overall value.  However we’ve heard that some of their customers are leaving the company because of service problems and up time problems as well.  It makes sense when you think about it.

HostGator is a huge company and sometimes when a web hosting company gets too big, their service suffers a little bit.  It’s not their fault even, it’s just that when a company grows fast it’s more and more difficult to play catch up.  This may be the case with HostGator.

We have also heard that their up time is suffering, which is death for any web host.  Once word leaks out that a web host isn’t completely reliable, there’s going to be trouble.  Now, some of the HostGator reviews that you read on the net are going to be BS, made up, fraudulent.  However, we’ve heard some complaints from some reliable places.

We hope that in 2011, HostGator will concentrate on servicing existing customers and businesses instead of trying to capture more market share.  This, we feel will greatly help improve their customer service and any up time issues.  We do feel that they are a great company, and that they are certainly addressing these problems right now.

(*UPDATE - As of May of 2012 HostGator has once again surged as one of the more reliable choices on the net. Most of the buzz about uptime issues was short-lived as many REAL customers have told us they don't run into many issues, and if they have, the company worked hard to make sure they got the hosting resources they needed.)

If you are looking for a very competitively price web host that places a decent deal of attention on customer support, friendliness, and server reliability…and more importantly has cheap web hosting packages, HostGator might be the host for you.  Make sure to use our HostGator Coupon listed at the beginning of this review to save a little extra cash.

Customer Reviews of HostGator

Kinda upsetting…

I’ve had to switch hosts twice in the past year, with HostGator being my third web hosting company.  Unfortunately I cannot fully recommend these guys either.  Their load times where poor…and when load times are poor I know that people are hitting the back button, which means my bounce rates start to fall…which means some of my rankings fall off!  I don’t like the fact that I have to pay the entire year’s hosting fees upfront, even though it is cheap, I guess I’m just not very trusting of web hosts anymore.  The security if fine over here and the support is responding to my inquiries and helping me, but I just cannot give these guys the full thumbs up right now.”

HostGator was great and then…

I used HostGator to host a handful of sites.  And then one day a lot of the links on my sites were broken, including a lot of very important URLS…like form URLS!!  My clients, prospects, and customers were not too happy and neither was I…thank God it was late at night and they did respond and fix the problem.  But, this is just not bullet proof hosting.  I guess maybe I need to upgrade to a VPS or dedi…but I was not happy with this at all.”

5star7 Our HostGator Review of The Top Pick for 2011

I think HostGator is Great!

Living in a foriegn country with plenty of cheap hosting options (India) I know what it’s like to go with dirt cheap web hosting companies and get absolutely garbage service with tons of errors and lots of downtime.  It’s awful.  I decided to go with an American hosting company and chose HostGator, I could not be happier.  The Live Chat is very helpful and the pricing is still very good…even if it’s not dirt cheap!  Nice work guys, keep it up.”

Using Host Gator as my main host right now after I closed some accounts with other hosts. Too many problems with other companies and they just put too many liitations. At least here it's unlimited hosting for less than $8 per month. Very good value for the money in my view. Very good support people who actually have the knowledge and information required to answer your questions in a very rapid and polite way. Glad to be doing business with them and recommended their services to many of my friends. Simply put, Host Gator rules and they're one of the best hosting companies that I dealt with in quite a long time. No hiccups such as server problems or slow loading times were encountered here which is something that's always welcomed from a hosting company. Very good.

HostGator is my all time favorite web host and the one that I've stayed with all this time. I used a lot of hosting companies in the past and would usually just close the account when I didn't need the website anymore. HostGator is the first one that I used to actually host multiple complete websites and not just landing pages. All went very well since I got them. Even when I'm not actively promoting any sites, I still keep my HostGator account open as I will be adding some new websites next month. I like the fact that with them you can pay on a monthly basis and that there's no commitment that you need to take when you sign up. So far they've proven their quality to me by their service and customer support. I only talked to sales and billing as I didn't have technical issues to discuss however every time I did they were always on top of their game. HostGator is an excellent host :)

Things at Host Gator are now off to a bad start and we're now canceling our services with them. Transferred some websites over to them. We needed a dedicated IP address and they started asking all kinds of question as to why we needed one and that it wasn't part of their shared hosting plans. I let the rep know that of course, it's not included in the plan as it's an additional service that we're willing to pay for. The idiot rep then said that they give them only on a case by case basis and that they could only give one out if we purchased an SSL certificate from them. We were really starting to go around in circles so I just let him know that I've had it with his company and that we're moving our hosting account someplace else. Of course, he didn't seem to be the least bit concerned about this. We had 4 websites that were on that account and now Host Gator lost our business and any future business from clients that we might recommend. The reason why I decided to move all client sites from Host Gator was not just due to this incident. There were many more problems with them but theyre all minor when compare to the rude reps that they have and poor customer support. There were many too many times where I had to wait more than 15 minutes for someone on the live chat to answer or on the phone. Reps did not even pay attention to what I was telling them half of the time, which just made any discussions much longer than they should have been. Now I'm really glad that we chose to go with the monthly option with Host Gator and never paid them anything in advance. At least there will be no more fighting trying to get our money back (which I'm sure wouldn't have happened) and we can just leave and move on. So remember that while Host Gator may look like a good web host their professionalism is seriously lacking as shown by this example and many others that I can't remember at this time.

The hosting at Hostgator is fine. Good plans and quite good prices considering the services offered with them. All unlimited so you can host multiple websites with them. Only bummer is that the domain needs to be paid for at $15 per year and that price is really more expensive than the rest in most cases. Even with that they remain a good choice and I recommend Hostgator.

Hostgator is more expensive then the competition so maybe this is why it's on place 10 on the list for the top ten web hosts. But I still believe that this company could have been placed higher mainly because of how good their plans are. They have some limits like to the quantity of processes you can run and the number of files you can store but these are indicated clearly in the control panel. Had no issues running 7 different sites and 3 of these were ecommerce sites that were running with a Magento installation that was provided by Hostgator in their Fantastico tool. Only had one time where I contacted billing to restore my account after I forgot to pay the hosting on time. Service was good and very friendly site was restored within 20 minutes of talking to them.

I recently switched all of my sites from Go Daddy to HostGator. There's many reasons that caused me to do this. First, Go Daddy has too much of a “corporate” attitude towards their customers in which they they were nothing but numbers in their computer system. You had to wait over 20 minutes when calling them by phone and the replies that you got when you contact them by email were often just form letters which don't address the issue that you asked at all. Furthermore many of the servers at Go Daddy seemed to be way too slow possibly due to the fact that they have too many customers that use their services now. When I made the change to HostGator I immediately noticed much better service. There were no slow times and the sites would all load extremely fast no matter what time of the day it was or how many visitors were already on the site. Installing things like Joomla or forum tools was much easier in Fantastico and it had the latest version of all software that you could need for your website. While I admit that the prices are higher with HostGator, there are many advantages to using them over Go Daddy. You can pay per month and get the exact same services than you would if you had taken 1, 2, or 3 years of service. The only difference is that the rate would be higher a bit. The Baby plan is the best at HostGator as you can have unlimited amounts of websites and parked domains. The only thing that isn't good is the amount they charge for domains. $15 per domain per year is a bit too much in my opinion. This is why I took my domains through Network Solutions as they had a promotions going on where you can get a domain name for just $5 per year. Pointing the domain over to HostGator was very easy and done simply by changing the name servers. Email was working right away and the website was available in less than a few hours for me. Since I didn't have any bad experiences with HostGator and they're much superior to GoDaddy I would recommend them if you want a hosting company that is very dependable and supports an unlimited amount of websites in one account. You will probably be very happy with the services you get as their limits are quite generous and not restrictive like other web hosts. If you want dedicated or reseller hosting types they have these as well but these are of course more expensive than just using shared web hosting.

Just like a lot of people I'm with Host Gator for a long time, since 2007 to be precise. I now have an Aluminum reseller hosting account as I have a lot of web sites even though I don't resell hosting space at the moment. I see that many of the negative comments coming from people using Host Gator are from those that don't understand what shared hosting is. You can't expect a website that has 100 000 visitors a day to perform well on a shared hosting account that costs $7 per month. If you have that many daily visitors you're surely making enough money monetizing the site to afford a better plan. I'm looking to see what the upgrade options are if I need a more powerful hosting than the Aluminum reseller plan and am considering either the VPS or Dedi options. Good thing that Host Gator has some powerful hosting solutions and not just shared hosting. Had a few billing issues and issues with the server but that's nothing worth going into details since this was all fixed by Host Gator very quickly. I don't even remember what the problems were so this goes to say that it wasn't anything that affected my business in any negative way. No matter whether your site is big or small Host Gator will always have a hosting solution for you. The only thing that you need to do on your part is to select the hosting option that will be the most appropriate for the type of site you're going to build and the amount of visitors you're expecting to get. If you do the homework on your end then Host Gator will work fine for you.

The hosting at HostGator is the best. I'm not sure why you put this company at the bottom of the list in the top ten web hosts list, because it should much better be at the top of the list. The prices are not cheap, but then again they SHOULD NOT be if it's a quality web host. Many of your companies that are too cheap are cheap for a reason, they oversell their space and cut back on customer service. Plus, they claim everything is unlimited and kick you out if you get more than 20 visitors a day. Good thing that this kind of crap never happens with HostGator. I'm able to have 8 sites on their package which costs me $9.95 per month as I'm paying monthly. Couldn't have been more satisfied with a hosting company in the entire time that I've had websites. Go Gator! They deserve to be at the top spott!
