What is Reseller Hosting Anyway?
Have you ever heard of reseller hosting? This is a type of web hosting that you purchase through a middleman between you and the actually hosting company. This may seem a bit silly considering there are many hosting companies out there that you can go to and get website hosting from directly.
The thing about reseller hosting is that it can be cheaper sometimes and you may get some type of incentive like a guide to website design or something else to entice you to choose the hosting the reseller has to offer. Is this a good thing and is reseller hosting worth the saving? The answers are below.
Should you Use Reseller Hosting or Not?
This is not Shakespeare and it is not nearly as difficult to understand either. Reseller hosting is nothing that you want unless you are not trying to make money from the website you are putting up or planning to put up. This type of hosting is not horrible and is not as bad a free hosting, but it is not what you want.
There are specific types of hosting for different types of people and businesses. It all starts with shared hosting, which is mainly what reseller hosting is, but shared hosting directly from a hosting company is better and not that much more expensive, if at all. This is the type of hosting that has you sharing the resources of a server with many other websites and hosting accounts.
The difference between shared web hosting from one of the top hosting companies and getting it from a reseller is the benefits. You may get the same exact hosting, but the support will be worse and the downtime will be more. This is because you have to go through the reseller and not the hosting company directly.
Many hosting companies like BlueHost and HostGator are well-known for their support and customer service. You may be able to contact them directly and get a response within a minute or two. If you have reseller hosting and your site goes down you may wait hours or days for the reseller to get around to fixing it for you through the hosting company.
You can also choose to go with VPS web hosting or a dedicated server. These are not usually offered from reseller hosting, but they are from a hosting company. You probably will not be able to upgrade to either of these from the reseller, but you can if you have your hosting through one of the top web hosting choices.
What you Don't Get with Reseller Hosting
The bottom line is that with reseller hosting you simply do not get everything you are paying for. Typically the reseller is spending too much time marketing and trying to gain new client instead of taking care of the server space and making sure your site is up as much as possible. This is what a real hosting company like BlueHost will do for you.
If you decide to go with hosting from the middleman you are going to find it to be much more disappointing than using an actual host that knows what they are doing. The hosting companies have the benefit of being more than a one person operation whereas reseller hosting is typically only one person trying to do it all.
